February News

Dear Parents:

Thank you for checking in on this blog.  I feel that this is a very useful tool to help you keep track of your child's learning and get updates on school and class news.  Please continue to check in.

Curriculum Updates for February:

We will start our Multiplication towards the end of the month.  Students should continue to practise their math facts up to 10.

Reading - continue readind the novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulaine.   Students will be using drama strategies to help deepen their understanding of this text.  They will then create model clay characters in art class and use their art to inspire some perspective writing.  This is a very exciting project that will be documented on the GECDSB Board's ArtSmart website.  Stay posted for updates.

Researching Non-fiction Texts:

Each year students in grades 4-8 participate in an Oral Communications Festival where they are required to write and present a speech of 3-5 minutes in front of the class.  Representatives of each grade then present in front of the school to find 3 overall winners.  Grade 3 students will have the opportunity to listen to the speeches to help prepare them for next year.

By the end of this year, 3A students will present at least 2 "mini speeches" or presentations of  2-3 minutes in length to improve their oral fluency skills.  To get them started, students are learning to research various topics of their choice using search engines that are more appropriate and kid friendly than Google.  Please allow your child some computer time at home to begin researching a topic of their choice.

We will continue to add different search engines and research methods to our list.  When I feel that students are ready, we will begin the writing process.
